Messaging & Calling Preferences

TextNow has many options available to tweak your messaging and calling preferences to your liking. Here's a quick guide!


  1. Go to your Wireless Account page on TextNow.
  2. Click on My Account in the top right-hand corner.


  3. Click on Settings.


  4. Click on Messaging & Calling.


From the online portal, you can set your Messaging preferences for:

  • Playing notification sounds on incoming texts when online
  • Sending an email notification when you receive a new text
  • Resend email verifications
  • Edit or remove your signature on texts.

Under Calling, you can select the option to send missed calls to your voicemail when online.

And finally, you can also view the numbers you've blocked from your TextNow account. 

On the TextNow app: 

  1. Open your TextNow app and sign into your account, if you haven't already.
  2. Tap on the main menu button 3dashes-4.png , and then tap on the settings icon ic_settings_24dp-2.jpg   on the main menu.
  3. Tap on Messaging for your messaging options, and Calling for your calling options. 

Under Messaging, you can:

  • Edit or remove your signature
  • Edit your Quick Reply settings (floating chat heads, message pop-ups and lock screen quick replies). 

Under Calling, you can:

  • Record a voicemail greeting (or use the default greeting)
  • Change your ringtone
  • Set up call forwarding
  • Set screen lock options
  • Manage your blocked numbers
  • Set to automatically connect to WiFi networks.

    We will not be able to retrieve a message or conversation once it has been manually deleted but you can try dragging your finger downward from the top of the conversation to refresh any available messages!

    Thanks for the question. If you'd like to turn of the floating chat heads, please give these steps a try::

    >Open TextNow
    >Select Menu
    >Select Settings (Gear icon)
    >Select Messaging
    >Quick Reply then turn off 'Floating Chat'

    How do I manually delete text messages

    Hi Sherry,

    In order to delete conversations through your TextNow application, follow the steps below:
    1. Open the Conversations page on your TextNow application
    2. Find the conversation you want to delete
    3. Swipe that Conversation from right to left
    4. A red garbage can icon will be revealed, select it to delete

    Hey Alison! This may be an issue with the other carrier (of the number you're trying to text), or perhaps you're not putting in the full 10 digit number?

    How do i retrieve messages that just disappeared? Is there away to view recent account activity?

    Hi Jennifer,

    It is not possible to retrieve deleted messages, but if the messages just disappeared, it is possible you'll be able login to your account on another device through the app or browser and the messages will still be there. If that's the case you may just have a bug on the device that the messages disappeared from.

    Please note that conversation threads typically do expire after 30+ days without use, so if the messages you're missing are older, that could be what happened to them. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns though :)

    Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, the texts im missing r from work and i have never deleted them and was always able to view as far back as november 2016. I had just looked at the messages on aunday and monday when i went to pull them up they were gone. I cant get them on my phone or on my computer, or on my tablet. Is there away to view recent activity on my account? Maybe itll ahow if they were deleted and when so i can figure this out?

    Yes, once you're back on Wifi you should receive the notification that you had a missed call as well as receive any voicemail that may have been left for you!

    I have had the same type of problems. I seem to always have trouble finding old messages and photos that I have deleted.

    Hi Timmy,

    Deleted messages and photos are not recoverable through the TextNow application, so you'll have to make sure that you're not deleting anything that you may want access to in the future. If you're using an Android device, you can also export that information from your TextNow application so you have a record of it emailed to you for future reference.

    So i recently activated a phone through text now and the number they gave me is not the same as the text now number i had before and i can't receive messages through the phone only in text now

    So I had to wipe my phone and when I redownloaded the app my number wasn't the same and all my saved messages and numbers that I had were deleted. How do I retrieve those numbers and messages from the app?

    When using the TextNow Wireless service, you will still be required to make all calls and texts through the TextNow application. It also looks like you've had the same number on your account since late May, so you should still have access to the number you had then as long as you're logged into the correct account.


    By wiping your phone you would have also removed all of the contacts from your device. Since the TextNow contacts list is synced to your phone's contacts rather than saving them to the app itself, you will need to re-add your contacts to your phone and then Allow TextNow to access that list if you haven't already. Additionally, any messages that had been deleted from your TextNow app when you wiped your device will not be recoverable. You can however try logging into your account online at to see if they are still saved to your account online rather than through the app.

    If I change the settings on one device does it change it on all of them or just that one?

    Hi there,

    That's a good question! If you change any Settings within your TextNow app, like the ringtone or notification sound, it will not change on each device you're logged into unless you manually change it in each device. Any devices that you do not choose to change will remain with the default settings.

    Ok so I logged out & deleted the app, now I'm worried that someone texted me while I was off the app. Will a person's text still go through while the app is deleted?

    Hey there! That is correct, as the app runs off of a cloud service. Deleting the app does not delete the account (as we cannot delete accounts for legal reasons), so if someone still has the number, they can still text it.
