How Does Data Work With TextNow?

The data connection on your TextNow device is used for all of your phone's communication - calling, texting, and accessing the internet. (Calling uses about 0.3MB of data per minute, and you can send hundreds of texts for 1MB of data.) 

Our 2GB LTE and 5GB LTe plans will switch to 2G data when you go over your data plan's allotment of 3G/4G, but there are methods to help conserve 3G/4G data on your TextNow phone. Here are some tips:

Connect to WiFi whenever possible.

Using a WiFi connection has benefits over using your 3G/4G data connection. Most important, WiFi won't use up the data on your account, you'll also have a faster and more reliable Internet connection and better call quality.

Your phone will connect to and remember many different WiFi networks. Join your home WiFi, connect to your friends or family members' WiFi at the places you frequently visit, or search for public WiFI networks in your vicinity. (Note that public WiFi may require opening your browser to complete an additional sign-in page.) 

To join a WiFi network in your area, go to the Settings application > WiFi > and select the WiFi network name (also known as "SSID"). 

 Enter the password when it asks you for a password:

Once you’ve setup your WiFi you will see Connected under the WiFi name (Network SSID).

When connected to WiFi you will also see this wifi symbol on the notification bar across the top of your device: 

This will let you know that you are connecting to WiFi and your 3G/4G data is not being used. It will also show you the signal strength for your WiFi connection. 

Next time you are in proximity of the WiFi network, your device will remember to connect to it.

Monitor your data usage

When your device isn't connected to WiFi, it will use your plan's mobile data. Therefore, it is important to understand what is using your data when you're not connected to WiFi.

Your device has a built in data usage tracker inside the Settings app, which has the ability to help you monitor and control your data usage.

To access the data usage tracker, to go the Settings app > Data Usage.

Mobile data this will disable 3G/4G connection. Warning: if this is turned off it will prevent you from sending and receiving messages whenever you are off WiFi

Limit mobile data will disable your data once you’ve reached the set limit. To set the limit simply touch and drag the red line on the graph. (We do not recommend turning this option on as TextNow does not charge data overage fees.)

Alert me about data usage will give you a warning once you’ve reached the set data. To set the warning simply touch and drag the orange line on the graph.

Data usage cycle will allow you to view your past data usage history and will also let you change your data cycle. The graph will update accordingly.

To know which apps are consuming the most data, scroll down and you will see the following:


If a particular application is using too much data, you may limit the application's data usage when not being used by tapping the application in question and turn on Restrict app background data.

TextNow will never charge you for overages. When you exceed your plan's data limit, data access is still available at 2G speed.

Should you require more high speed mobile data, you can upgrade your plan at any time. You can do this by tapping on the My Wireless Account section of your TextNow app, or online at textnow.com in the Account tab.

    @ Laura: Thanks for your order! If you ordered on Friday, your phone will be picked up by UPS today (Mon, Feb 1st), and we'll be emailing you a tracking number just as soon as the package is scanned by UPS for delivery. You'll be receiving your phone by Wednesday at the latest.

    So... I just purchased an Moto E and am currently waiting for it too arrive. Along with the purchase I ordered a Tall plan. Do I have to wait for my TextNow Phone to use my data and plan?

    Your TextNow plan is only active on the Moto E, but you can log into your account on any wifi-enabled device for use over wifi! You can grab links to our free apps here - www.textnow.com/downloads - or even login into your account on our website to use your browser for calling and texting!

    I bought a phone in January from you and my battery has began to swell which is not good, i cant even have my case on or close the back of the phone without it putting pressure on the screen. Is there anyway i could receive a replacement? I saw that there is a 1 year warranty. Does that cover faulty batteries?

    So I used up all my 4G/3G data, and it still shows it using 3G when I'm not using wifi. Do I have to switch it to 2G myself? If so how?

    That's a great question! You don't have to do anything on your end, as your phone is automatically using 2G once you go over your data plan.

    We don't officially support hotspot on our TextNow phones, but I've turned the capability on your phone on our back-end here, so give it a try! You can find the settings for your tethering and hotspot under your main Settings > More Settings > Mobile Networks.

    There's also a free app you can download that will set it up for you, "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot" by Core Technologies. You can find it in the Play Store on your device.

    You can find the Data Usage monitor on your Aquos under the main Settings app > Data Usage. Scroll down under the graph on that page to see the apps that have used data.

    Question: Is there a way to monitor the usage of my textnow phone other than with the app on the actual handset? IE: If I were to get a device for my kids, is there any way that I can see what they are accessing using the handset without the actual handset in my possession?

    That's a great question!

    TextNow as a service is unique in our market in that you can log into your account from multiple places - online here at www.textnow.com, or from another app downloaded to a device. Many of our customers who have children using TextNow really like the ability to log in and check out their children's messages and call history without needing access to the phone itself.

    As far as the rest of the phone's apps goes, you'll have to look through the Play Store for various apps that might offer remote information on what your child is using. (Not having children myself I'm not aware of any specific apps I can recommend.) But at least with regards to the TextNow app, you'll definitely be able to monitor your children's usage.

    That's a great inquiry! I'm afraid that the Short $13.99 plan is currently our lowest-priced plan, and we do not have any 2G only plans as such.

    I assure you that it's a great deal, and you would be welcome to suspend/cancel your service at any time!
