Changing Your Number

With TextNow, you have the option to change your phone number once every fifteen days. Here's how!

  1. Open TextNow app on your TextNow Wireless phone
  2. Tap on the Menu button in the top left-hand of the app  , and then tap on the Settings icon
  3. Tap Account
  4. Tap on TextNow Number
  5. Tap on the menu button (three vertical dots) in the top right-hand corner.
  6. Tap Release Number to complete the change

Please note: a number change is irreversible once completed. When you release your current number, it can not be returned to you.

I released my phone number and requested a new one not 30 seconds later. It gave me the exact same number. When I attempted to release it and get another one it told me I could not do so for another 15 days. Wow.

    @ Victoria:

That sounds like a strange glitch on our end, perhaps. I've sent you an email to the address we have for you on file - please respond, and we can reassign you a new number in any area code you like!

Hello, I have had my Text Now account for a while now, and it is not the correct area code, will releasing my number mess with my data plan? Or will it be as if nothing happened?

  • Avatar
    TextNow .

    Hey Shylynn,

Thanks for reaching out to TextNow Wireless support. Releasing your number will not interfere at all with your data plan. If you would like to release the number in order to get a new one you can do so without any service interruption. Even if there is no TextNow number attached to your account your phone will still be delivered a data plan.

Once you release your number you will be able to select a new area code and if there is number available for that area code you will be assigned a new one.

Can I change my text now phone number to my landline number????

  • Avatar
    Kevin TextNow Support

    HI, Kelly:

If you're speaking about porting a landline number to TextNow, we should be able to. That would mean that your landline would no longer carry that number, and instead it would be used on your TextNow phone.

Drop me an email to orders@textnow.com with the number, and I can check its availability!

my number was released without my knowledge...i REALLY need that number back,is it possible?

  • Avatar
    Kevin TextNow Support

    Hi, Jarred:

Thanks for contacting TextNow Support! I'm afraid the previous number you had has been recycled and assigned to another user. To prevent your number from being recycled in the future, you can purchase our Premium features in-app (which includes phone number locking), or purchase a phone plan from us here: www.textnow.com/wireless.

I want to port my number i have sent many emails but still cant do it myself. Can u please help me.

  • Avatar
    Kevin TextNow Support

@ Amanda: Sorry for the late reply! To port a number into TextNow, we need to know the account number for the phone number you're looking to port to TextNow, and any associated PIN (if there is one). Your previous carrier will know the account number for the phone.

Once you have that info, your can start the porting process by going to your My Account page right here on www.textnow.com and clicking on Number Porting.

If you need any speedier assistance, you can chat with one of our chat agents on this (or any other) Support page, and they'll be happy to assist you.

    @ Bre:

No problem! I've assigned you a number with the 704 area code on your account now.

For future reference, you can change your phone number on the app itself under the main TextNow menu > Profile > TextNow Number. Tap on the icon with the three dots in the upper right hand corner, and select "Release number". The app will then ask you for another area code and assign you a number in that area code, if any numbers are available.

Hello I have been using the app for years now and my account/number recently got terminated. The text now team messaged me telling me I wasn't using my number often enough, which was not the case. They are telling me to make a new number. Will all my old messages be deleted if I make a new number??? If yes, I need my old number back.

  • Avatar
    Taylor TextNow Support

    Hi Nayyara,

    Thanks for your question!

The numbers of free TextNow accounts expire after not being used for a week or two. TextNow sends warning emails to the account on file before the numbers are re-assigned.

Assigning yourself a new number will not delete any of your messages, but you will have to let your contacts know of the change as they will see the messages and calls from the new number. :)
