In App Advertising killing Batteries....

The other day this program chomped my phones battery in 4 hours and half my tablet's battery over the course of a day. I normally get 6-7 days out of my tablet while idle without charging. I took a look around in Battery Consumption's to see that 60% of my battery drain was TextNow... The program wasn't used at all on the tablet that day and only on my phone... This kind of problem maybe a deterrent for many people as they don't want an app that causes so much battery consumption...

However, I just purchased the year subscription to lock my number and get rid of the advertising... This worked immediately on the device that I used to do the purchase, but the other devices didn't update that setting until after I force closed the app and reloaded it.

Today Battery usage is about what I'd expect for an app like this, having maybe a 7-10% impact on battery life... You really need to research into this... When advertising is enabled the device uses quite a bit more data and drains the battery even when the app isn't active (on screen vs background).

I recommend you change your advertising engine or disable the engine when the program is in the background... Then wait for the foreground event to reactivate the engine...

You may want to skip the advertising engine and go directly with creating limitations.... 500 Minutes/Mo, 1000 Text Messages/Mo, etc... These engines greatly bloat the size of the program, memory usage and battery life. People aren't going to stick around and pay money for a program that eats their battery. Especially if they don't know that making the purchase to get rid of the ads will fix the battery life problem. They will see what I saw and uninstall it.

You guys need to do some of your own testing on this... Keep in mind that you need to give it a day... The first day I had TextNow, it didn't advertise at all and my battery life was fine. I think the engine needs a day to stack up on cached advertising to present to the user. By day 2, that's when all battery life went to crap....

Hi, Raymond:

Thanks for your post!

You shouldn't have to buy ad removal for a battery-usage problem. Generally speaking, if you force-close the app it should also refresh the ads being served.

We do test the app here very extensively, on a number of different devices, but we obvioulsy can't test it on every possible smartphone or tablet available on the market. If you run into a problem with the app using too much battery life, please let us know immediately and we can pass it to our developers for a closer look.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention, and let me know if I can be of any other assistance!

This app is running on 4 different devices... They all responded the same... Some died quicker than others... After having the app with in-app ads and now having them removed, it has had the same impact on all 4 devices... The level of drain is dependent on each device but they all show more drain with ads running.

Hi, again:

If it happens again, if possible take a screenshot of the ad in question so I can pass it to my developers. We have run into issues with bad ads being served that can cause issues like the ones you're describing.

You can send those screenshots to me directly at orders@textnow.com

And thanks for using TextNow!

I am here with the same problem - ads started after the 5 initial days ad free and suddenly my battery life is plummeting. I have multiple ads so have no idea if one is more of a battery hog than another.

I am willing to purchase the ad free, but want to ensure this will solve my battery problem, or else I will not bother to continue. I can usually last close to 2 days without recharge but at this rate I will have a dead battery before I come home from work same day which makes the app pointless.

Can you confirm the ads cause substantially increase battery drain?

Using an iphone 5s but sounds like the OP has multiple devices with same results.

Thank you - Richard

Hi Richard,

We would need more information to determine if your battery drainage is indeed being caused by the in-app ads you're seeing. Upgrading to our premium app should help, but I cannot guarantee it without verifying that TextNow is definitely the main battery user. Please reach out to our chat support team if you'd like to get a more definite answer.

I just noticed this tonight also.  I didn't know Text Now was ad free for the past few days until I read this posting.  And that explains what's been happening to my Nexus.  All went well the past few days and then tonight, my phone went from 75% to 42% in an hour with screen time only to check a text and off it went.  And, when I went to shut the phone off, the back of the device was VERY hot. So, it must be the ads that just showed up in the app tonight.  But, what do I do?  I love this app and, I have a non removable battery which is a nightmare to replace.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. Before hitting "Submit" on this post, I put the WiFi on.  I had it shut down while I was charging the phone.  Anyhow, I put WiFi on and opened up the Text Now app and, in just a few minutes of the ads showing up, my phone is starting to heat up again.

It's me again.  I'm telling you, this is no joke. I'm considering looking into another app.  And I LOVE text now.  But, ever since ads showed up ( a few days after I installed the app), my battery heats up very hot.  Read a lot of postings about it being something else causing this battery heat up but it happened the very night ads showed up and has been happening ever since.  Now, I do a text and then, shut the program down to save my battery.  Not sure if it's working since I only started that tonight.  I installed the app on my husbands phone tonight and, in less than 5 minutes, his battery got fire hot too.  NOTHING EVER did that to his phone either.  Even got into an argument with him because he got angry with me for installing it on to his phone and heating up his battery so.  Please fix this.  It's the ads, no doubt about it.  And, in only about 5 minutes after I put my phone on it heats the battery up. That's pretty heavy duty.

Thanks Valeria for your response.  Yeah, just put phone on and the battery is already getting warm after 2 minutes of the app being opened.  You mentioned me doing a chat.  Are you talking about doing a chat from my PC or from my phone?  And, it it's by phone, since that's the device you want to troubleshoot, how do I get to chat using the app on my phone.  Thanks.

If you can, we would like for you to start a chat on a desktop or any other device available.

If there isn't another one available, you can start one on your phone by going to textnow.com/wireless and tapping on the bottom right-hand side chat bubble icon.

Thanks Valerie.  I'm gonna have to figure out how to schedule this chat with my time schedule but, great to know you're  here for me.  Hopefully, some time this week since, it happened again when I used the app.  Within 5 minutes the back of the phone heated up so, thanks for offering to work with me on this issue.

All the best,

Annette
