Using TextNow Abroad

Hello,

I will be leaving the USA. I won't be keeping my USA SIM card. Will I be able to receive calls and texts to my TextNow number, from non-USA/Canadian phone numbers?

Thanks!

Hey Madison, thank you for your reply.  So, I'm still unclear.  Do you mind helping me?  My understanding is that I can receive calls and texts to my TextNow number, from non-USA/Canadian phone numbers AS LONG AS that person is using one of the partner networks TextNow has established abroad. SO, for me to receive a call or text for free on my TextNow number from an Italian person, they would need to be using either of these two networks:

POSTE MOBILE

NOVERCA

Is that right?

Thanks!

Hey Michelle! That is not quite correct, and let me clear up the confusion.

With regards to incoming calls, we support all carriers. The only block would be whether the other carrier (the one that is calling you) supports international calling. That isn't anything that we can control ourselves.

All outbound calling to international numbers are subject to our international rates

Messaging is a bit different. For international messaging, we only support specific international carriers, and if supported, it won't cost anything!

OK, great. So, for texts, if the OTHER person is on one of your supported international carriers, they can text my TextNow number for free (and I can do the same to them)?

Thanks so much for your patience.

The "free" international texting only applies to us. For the other person who is texting you, they may be subject to their own carrier's rates.

Got it. But, if they're using one of the supported networks, it is FREE for ME to text THEM.  Right?

Thanks, so much!

So, what does buying the data give me? I'm guessing it allows me to place calls and send texts from my TextNow number to any non-USA/Canadian number?

Thank you!

Hi Michelle,

Our data plans allow you to call and text with TextNow off of WiFi, and also provides you with data service that you can use to browser the web and use other apps off of WiFi.

Right. And, so, without Wifi, then I'm paying for TextNow to hook me up to whatever local telecomms networks are in that country?

If you're not around Wi-Fi, and you have one of our wireless subscriptions, you will only be able to connect to a Sprint data connection (as those are the network towers we have access to)

Hello!  I just tried to use my TextNow number as my contact number for a couple of online services (as the second step in two-step verification).  Neither of these services could text me.  One of them told me the number is already in use.  What's going on?

Thanks.

Hey Michele! There are a couple of things that seem to be at play here.

Firstly, I'm sorry, but we don't officially support verification codes with our free or premium numbers. Since our numbers are labelled as virtual, not all third-party apps/systems will recognize them for verification, either.

With the "phone number in use"- that seems like an issue stemming from the exact reason why we don't support them in the first place. Since our numbers are easily changeable/can be recycled from accounts if left inactive, there is a high possibility that a number that you receive has already been used for 2FA with other apps by its previous owners.

Ok, I see. So, I can't use it for a two-step verification process, basically?  Are there any other limitations like this?  I was pretty excited to use it for just this purpose, as I travel abroad.

Thanks for the very helpful info!

And I'm also getting  a lot of calls from numbers I don't know. And there's no one on the other end of them, it's just silent....Is this normal?

Hey Michele! Unfortunately, in our current times, this is more common than you'd think. Since all our numbers are recycled between accounts as they become inactive (at least for free accounts), it may also be that you are receiving calls meant for the previous owner. You can simply block these by messaging the numbers with #STOP.
